About Thorpe Salvin

This pleasant, harmonious village, was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086, thus it has a history lost in the mists of time. It is home to the ruined Thorpe Hall, an Elizabethan manor house, built for the Sandford family in 1570. Not much of the hall remains, but there is sufficient to show what an impressive building it once was. For a time the hall was occupied by the 1st Duke of Leeds who thought it not grand nor modern enough to suit his status, so he opted to have a new seat built at Kiveton. After the Duke departed to his new, grander home, the hall was never again occupied and it fell into a state of decay. Today, what is left of the once proud house, is cared for by English Heritage.

The limestone village church dates back to the 12th-century. The church, dedicated to St. Peter is included in Simon Jenkins "England's One Thousand Best Churches". It has an interesting Norman Font made from Caen stone showing six relief panels depicting baptism and the four seasons. There is also a chained St.James's Bible, which interestingly was purchased by the church wardens in 1641 for the sum of Fifty Eight Shillings, a considerable sum in those days. Visitors enter the church through a Norman doorway covered by an Elizabethan Porch.

In summertime the village becomes a wonderland of flowers and it is therefore unsurprising to learn that it has been the winner of the Britain in Bloom Champion Village title on no less than three occasions, and that it has won the Entente Florale, and received the Gold Medal Entente Florale for 2002.

Thorpe Salvin has a lovely atmosphere and delightful village cottages and houses. There is an attractive village pub, and private houses with picturesque gardens open for public view.

The village is located in fine countryside between Killamarsh and Worksop.
