About Bitterley

Bitterley is an ancient village that is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was known as Buterlei. The village sits beneath the western slopes of Titterstone Clee Hill, one of the famous Clee Hills in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The village is approx 4 miles east of the historic market town of Ludlow, and is the location of Bitterley Court - a Grade II listed building and longtime seat of the Walcot family.

Another Grade II listed building is the 18th century Henley Hall, which is a country house in 80 hectares of parkland and can be found on the western outskirts of the village. It was rebuilt in 1772 by Thomas Knight and is available for weddings and other events.

The Church of St Mary dates back to the 12th century was restored in 1876 and 1880. In the churchyard is a 14th century cross, which is a Grade I listed structure and the best surviving cross in Shopshire.
