About Westonzoyland

This attractive Somerset village is found within easy reach of the old town of Bridgewater. Centuries ago it was the scene of the fierce Battle of Sedgemoor which took place on the 6th of July 1685 between rebel troops under James, Duke of Monmouth and a Royal army led by Lord Feversham. It is recorded that over a thousand men lost their lives in the battle, these are honoured by a plaque in the village.

Westonzoyland lies in what may be a lesser known part of Somerset, yet it is situated in magnificent countryside close to several famous attractions. It is the home of a pumping station of 1831, this was the first steam powered pumping station built in the region and is now an interesting museum with exhibits including a Willis engine, Lancashire boiler, the original forge and a Lister generating plant. The museum offers a number of events, these include "Steam Days" when visitors can see various restored engines in action.

In the village there is an attractive mix of properties to be seen, these range from handsome foliage clad Georgian buildings to terraces, cottages and modern housing. There is an interesting church and the local pub is appropriately named The Sedgemoor Inn.
