About Hampton Bishop

This picturesque village with it's wealth of half-timbered properties lies comfortably between two enchanting rivers, the Wye and the Lugg. At this point, the Wye has some of the best salmon beats, 40 pounders plus have been caught here, and there are superb riverside walks to be enjoyed along the winding path which eventually meets with the Lugg just short of Mordiford.

The village church here must rank as one of the most photographed churches in the country. It is a vision of neo-medieval perfection. The tower and some of the walls originated in Norman times and show additions from the 13th and 14th-century. On top of the tower is perched a black and white timber-framed belfrey that is often described as a clock tower, it does though contain six bells.
The interior of the church is cool but welcoming and amongst it's treasures is a red canopied 15th-century screen. Next to the church is a pretty thatched roofed cottage, almost hidden by a bright green hedge, it is typical of the cottages and houses to be seen along the village high street. This is a village that demonstrates the skill of the thatcher and those who built the remarkable wattle and daub, timber-frame cottages of the 17th and 18th-century. It is a tribute to the artisans of the past that these fine buildings are here for us to relish today.

All around here is rich pastureland grazed by sheep and cattle. There are fields full of towering Hops and orchards crammed with Apples, Pears and Plumbs. Here and there down a deep leafy lane you will find a quiet corner with a lake where fishermen land Carp. It is all very serene and very, very English.

Attractions in the area include; Rotherwas Chapel and nearby Hereford Cathedral. There is a museum in Hereford that tells much of the life and times of the area. Hereford also has excellent shopping facilities and a Race Course.
