Description

Dunure Castle, South Ayrshire

Dunure Castle is located 5 miles south of Ayr in Scotland; it stands in ruins on a rocky promontory on the Carrick coast protecting the small Dunure harbour. The remains date from the 15th or 16th centuries and is the point of origin of the Kennedy family of Carrick who once ruled over much of south-west Scotland. The beehive shaped building is a dovecote which once supplied the castle with eggs and meat from 200 nest boxes.
