The grave of Sir Roger de Fery shows how badly it has withstood the ravages of time and climate. Sir Roger (after whom the town of Ferryhill is named) is said to have slain a wild boar that was terrorising the area. Possibly 'The Brawn of Brancepeth' The name Brancepeth is derived from 'Brawn's Path'. Another historic grave in the churchyard, which was closed to burials in 1989, is that of RN Surgeon John Stokoe, who attended Napoleon during his exile on St. Helena.
