Description

A picture of Lincoln

Tucked away behind some trees in Newport, Lincoln, stands St Nicholas Church, a building that replaced a much earlier church. The original ancient church was about 500 yards to the south of the present one and was so badly damaged in the Civil War that most of it was dismantled and the stone used to reinforce the city defences. For more than a century there was no church building in the parish. During the 1830s it was considered that the provision of a church would give a civilising influence to this area of Lincoln which had a reputation as being rather a rough suburb. Land was given, and a competition held for the design. The winner was George Gilbert Scott, a young architect who, until then, had worked on municipal buildings, such as workhouses. St. Nicholas was his first church and it was built in 1840. The north and south aisles were added later, as funds permitted. The chancel was added in 1909.
