About Chaddesley Corbett

Chaddesley Corbett is a fine example of how rural life can continue unhindered by the urban sprawl that surrounds it. Chaddesley Corbett is fortunate in being a spaciously set village with a strong farming community. The church is the dominating feature of the village, its Norman tower and spire, rebuilt at the end of the 18th-century, can be seen for miles around. It is an interesting church, the Nave is Norman and there is later work from the 14th-century. Amongst the many treasures, the church shows a lovely carved, early Norman font with intricate interlaced work and dragons and early 14th-century monuments. The delightful sound of the church bells can be heard at regular intervals. Interestingly, the church id dedicated to St. Cassian who was an early christian schoolmaster who was reputed to have been murdered by his pagan pupils.

The main street through the village shows fine examples of half-timbered black and white cottages and handsome Georgian properties. The Talbot Inn is an elaborate timber-framed building dating from the 17th-century. This is a very mellow village where the old blends harmoniously with barn conversions and new build.

A short distance from the village is Chaddesly Wood, a fine example of mature oak woodland. It is now a national nature reserve where there is much of interest for the naturalist and the botanist. Rare and beautiful plants flourish in this densley wooded area where in both summer and winter the air is filled with the sweet sound of birds nesting in the trees and circling the air above. Of the birds who make this lovely spot thier habitat there is the Sparrow Hawk, Woodcock and Willow Tit to be seen, also the Fieldfare and the Redwing.

Harvington Hall, a beautiful Elizabethan property dating from the 16th-century and associated with the persecution of catholics lies a short drive away. It shows Priests hiding places, secret passages and painted walls. It is well worth a visit.

Chaddesley Corbett has fortunately managed to retain an air of great charm and this is largely due to its wealth of picturesque buildings from all periods. It is a joy to visit and a must for anyone visiting the midlands.

Other places of interest in the area include; Ragley Hall, Coughton Court and Avoncroft Museum of Buildings.
