This wetland area can be found in the parkland of Dunham Massey, Greater Manchester, the former residence of the Earl of Stamford, now owned by the National Trust. The Roman road between Chester and York passed by here, but the name Dunham is of earlier Anglo-Saxon origin from the word 'dun' meaning 'hill'. The site consists of semi-natural woodland and several marl pits which have flooded to form ponds. The parkland nearby is the home of Dunham's herd of fallow deer, but on the day this picture was taken, this point was the limit of public access to avoid disturbing the deer during the breeding season.
