The Environmental Agency to the Rescue. A fallen tree washed into the river was jammed against the sluice, so before a whole lot more debris got stuck creating a dam local environmental officers had the task of dislodging the tree. Chatley Heath Semaphore Tower Built in 1821 the tower was one of 15 to allow messages to be sent to and from Whitehall and the Naval dockyard at Portsmouth. A message sent in relay from tower to tower in semaphore ( from the mast on top where the flags would come out in their required sequence ) and a message could be sent from London to Portsmouth in about 15 minutes.
