I was hoping Gillian might be able to tell us her grandfathers name, year and place of birth.

Thank you all for your kind messages, this is all the imformation I have.

My grandfather was named Edmund Watson born between 1876 - 1877 his sister was Clarissa  Watson.  I was told they came on a train together from Scotland.  I don't know whether they were in a workhouse there or somewhere else.  Someone took them out of the workhouse and put them in  homes in Broadstairs,  His oldest daughter was called Clarrisa Evelyn who I think was named after his sister. His sister went on to work on the Stage in London, so I have been told

I know he didnot have a birth cetificate.  On his marriage cetificate it is stated his father as William,  as a Tailor.  I have found him at an orphange at  Willesden, Hendon aged 12 stating he was born in Sheffield.   I have found a  Clarrisa Evelyn  Watson born 1st  December 1878 married a Albert Haycock, her father was also William, but as a Clerk, on the 1911 census it states born Dundee Scotland.

I contacted the Catholic Childrens Society (formed 1887) who informed me that they never had an orphange in Broadstairs but my Aunt assures me she went to Broadstairs with my grandfather to the home to visit.

Perhaps it was the private home of a Catholic in Broadstairs and not an institution?
