Description

Black Middens Bastle in the Tarset Valley

The substantial ruins of a 16th century bastle, a type of fortified farmhouse. Bastles were a very common feature of the Borders area in the 16th and early 17th century due to the constant raiding activities of the Border reivers who were bent on lifting cattle and sheep . . . and also taking hostages.
