A superb shot. It shows excellent detail and fine lighting. Your choice of wide aperture and medium telephoto focal length seems to work well for equine portraiture.

A compelling animal portrait; there's no way I could get such a successful shot with an ISO rating like this.

Hi David, I had to go for the high ISO because it was a overcast day and the horse was in a stable that had a protruding canopy over the front. I think the lack of light helped in a way because there were no harsh shadows to contend with. The actual aperture used was f5.6 (not sure why it says f2.8) which is very near the 'sweet spot' of the lens I was using. I had to go for 1/1600 because it was handheld and this gave me the sharpness. Lastly and most importantly the D800 performs brilliantly under high ISO conditions, all the reviews highlight this fact.
