The Dock Tower, Grimsby. Built to operate 10 pairs of lock gates, it now provides a low pressure water supply to the docks area. Built in 1851 of one million bricks made from clay found in the locality, it has a height of 309 feet and walls 4ft thick at the base. The design is based on the Palazzo Publico in Sienna, Italy. The tower is now grade one listed and open to the public on certain days (view N E Lincs web site for more infomation). I don't know of any other free standing tower in this country that is bigger, if there is, let me know. This picture was taken by Stephen Tappin

Victoria Street, the main mall is behind the shops on the left. Although of modist size it has a excellent range of shops set out in two parallel avenues and with multi-storey either end with direct access

Both East and West St Marys Gate are the bounders of the long gone Thatched St Marys Church. This was replaced as the parish church by the building of the present 13th century St James, on trace or records of the old church remain

View of the old Victoria Flour Mill towards Grimsby's commercial docks. The twin port of Grimsby & Immingham handle more goods than any other port in the country, and Grimsby has a vast car import centre.

The Ross Tiger birthed in Alexandra Dock, one of the few remaining middle distant fishing vessels still complete and can be viewed. At one time there were over 700 fishing vessels sailing from Grimsby, making it the biggest fishing port in the world at that time. Some history of the men who sailed in them can be found on the web site below.
