Description

Rye, East Sussex

The Mermaid Inn on Mermaid St, Rye, East Sussex. One of the drinking establishments of the nortorious Hawkhurst Gang who were into smuggling along the south coast from 1735 to 1749.They drank with their guns on the tables; their reign of terror coming to an end at Goudhurst, Kent in 1747 with a battle with the local militia.
