Description

The Maiwand Lion in the Forbury Gardens, Reading

The statue was erected in 1886 as a memorial to the deaths of 329 men of the 66th Berkshire Regiment at the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan. The sculptor was George Blackall Simonds. An erroneous myth persists in Reading that Simonds later committed suicide because he believed that the stance of the lion was anatomically incorrect. In fact Simonds researched his subject carefully and went on to live another 43 years.

Cracking capture Edward, saw this a few weeks back when we came to see the Abbey, ( which as you know has been closed - bit of a blow as we did not know). Great detail in the statue.
