Description

Ackworth School

A branch of The London Foundling Hospital was founded here at Ackworth in 1841 where abandoned children were sent up from London and brought up in local cottages mainly on Seaton's Farm, in 1846 a decision was made to build a hospital at Ackworth and so 58 acres of land were bought from Farmer Seaton it was another 11 years before building begun in 1757 it opened in 1759.
