Description

It Was Meant to be a Kingfisher

A short call at Warnham Nature Reserve today in the hope of catching sight of a kingfisher, but alas there was no sign of the elusive characters. I have never seen a kingfisher let alone photograph one save for a momentary flash of blue on the River Mole a few years ago. I believe this to be a Mandarin duck- well the chart on the inside of what is called the "Heron Hide" said as much. Kingfishers are often seen from this hide but never when I am there ( last time I visited a chap there waving his 500mm prime lens about showed me a kingfisher on his screen that he had just taken, so they are there--- sometimes !! )

This is a male Mandarin duck; good focussing has led to a sharp picture set off nicely by the light on the ripples.

Very nice shot Vince. I think I've only ever seen one Kingfisher and by the time the camera was out the bird had gone, such is life.
