History of Fawdon

The Northumbrian Piper, as it is now called, was originally Fawdon Hall and with it being built in 1848 makes it the third largest dwelling in the area. At this time a gentleman of the name Matthew Bell owned the premises and it is believed that it was the dower house for the Bells of Woolsington estate. Matthew died in 1871 and passed the house through the family uWatson, Watson & Watson acquired the property but then sold it on to Robin Rowell of Hawthorn who lived there quite happily until 1949.
Colonel Mould-Graham who was the Lord Mayor of Newcastle bought the property in 1949 who also used it for his stately home but when Kingston Park Road was built across the land he sold off his land and sold the building to Scottish & Newcastle breweries in 1966. Like every old building it is said to have visitors of the spirit kind (not the kind of spirits on sale today!).Until it reached Charles Bell in 1913.
Nobody knows the history of the Grey Lady as she likes to be called but more than a few have had funny encounters of the supernatural kind. So if you get a chill or a whisper in your ear just ask yourself if the Grey lady has just paid you a visit!
