Smutter - name of grain-cleaning machine ,(The smutter gets its name from a black fungus called smut which grows on grains. By tumbling and blowing the smutter cleans away this fungus and other impurities.) More information I found on website : http://spoommidatlantic.org/spoommidatlantic/site_files/editor_files/image/file/Milling%20History/Colvin_Run_Mill.pdf
