Description

Cadaver effigy of Alice de la Pole in St. Mary's Church, Ewelme

This view of the tomb of Alice de la Pole (Duchess of Suffolk) can only be seen by kneeling down and peering through the Gothic tracery of her tomb. The upper part of the tomb is shown on my other pictures of Ewelme, and its grandeur gives no hint of the reality below. The image seen here is perhaps to remind the viewer of the reality of death even for the nobility - a 'Memento Mori'.

The word 'haunting' has been used four times to describe this image, and there is certainly something unsettling about it.
