Description

Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle is located near Redmire in Wensleydale, Yorkshire DaleNational Park, built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard le Scrope, the 1st baron Scrope of Bolton, and is a fine exemple of a quadrangular castle. The most famous and notable event to have taken place in the castle's history is the stay of Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots, in 1568-1569 after her defeat at the battle of Langside and subsequent abdication in Scotland. The castle was besieged by parliamentary forces between 1644-1645 during the English Civil War and then slighted in 1647 with much of it pulled down.
