Description

Victoria, Woolton Village 20-04-2014.

Having lived in Woolton and Gateacre since 1968, the sight of a Woolton pub up for sale is a sad one for me. The Victoria stands in Quarry Street in which the hewn out sandstone cliffs are still there to be seen as is the old courthouse and police station, behind which in the yard once stood a gallows. The Victoria is a gem of a building and the odd glass of good ale has hit my grateful lips there. I hope that it can be sold to a buyer who wants to keep it as a public house. Sadly with thirty odd pubs closing weekly in our country one can but hope the trend does not apply here.

This looks like a building worth preserving in its own right, but the demise of the 'pub' generally seems unstoppable.

You are right David about the demise of the traditional pub, with thirty odd every week closing nationally. As an old geezer, I like traditional pubs where a quiet pint can be supped but as time passes, the numbers like me will decline. Bars are opening offering a different kind of place for maybe a younger more demanding customer wanting to be entertained. I'm off for a pint!
