Description

A picture of South Carlton

The Anglican parish church in the little village of South Carlton, a few miles north of Lincoln on the spring line below the Lincoln Ridge is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Extensively altered in 1787 it subsequently suffered what has been described as "a fatal restoration" in 1861 against the wishes of the parishioners and of the patron, Viscount Oxenbridge, 7th Baron Monson, who at the time was winterting in Torquay for his health. Intelligent guess work is the only guide to the older parts of the building, the west arch is, however, early Norman.
