Description

St. Andrew's, Ashby Puerorum, Lincolnshire

The small Anglican parish church at Ashby Puerorum is dedicated to St. Andrew and is a typically greenstone church of Early English origins with a massive tower. Extensively repaired in 1850 it had further restorations made in 1869 & had to be repaired again in 1877-8. The unusual village name has both Scandinavian & Latin origins and dates back to the 13th century when Bishop Oliver Sutton was responsible for the re-naming of this village previously known as just Ashby (from the Old Scandinavian Aesc+by, or "farmstead where ash trees grow") by adding the "Puerorum" which is from the Latin for "boys" (or, loosely, "children") after an estate was established here for the support of a boys' choir for Lincoln Cathedral.
