Exploring the most Picturesque & Historic parts of England
On the east side of Gallowtree Gate, near its junction with Humberstone Gate. Sporting Success comprises a group of three sportsmen in action: a cricketer, a footballer and a rugby player. The commission of the sculpture followed successful seasons by all three local teams in the 1996-97 seasons. The appeal to provide the statue was organised by the Leicester Mercury, and funds were received from the newspaper itself, from local businesses, and from many private individuals. The sculptor was Martin Williams, and the statue was unveiled on 16 November 1998 by Harold White and Martin Baker. The sculpture is in bronze on a concrete plinth faced with York stone.
