Description Description contains history

A carving on a felled tree of the Abbey Gate of Faversham.

The abbey was founded in 1148 by King Stephen of Boulogne and his wife. There are no remains of the monastery and the gateway was demolished sometime in the 18th century. It was a Cluniac monastery, the Cluniacs were Benedictine monks from Cluny in Burgundy formed originally by William, Duke of Aquitaine in 909.
