The ford across the River Darent in Eynsford predates the medieval stone bridge by at least 1000 years as it is known to have been used in Roman times, but the bridge is too narrow to carry heavy traffic, so the ford is still in use. Its also something of a social centre, as children are often seen paddling there in the summer, while the families use the adjacent village green.
The village of Appleton in Oxfordshire, is home to the company 'White's of Appleton', a contractor for hanging church bells, and which is now the oldest bellhanging company still trading in the UK.
