Description

Queen Elizabeth's Memorial Oak Tree

This Oak Tree was planted by Queen Elizabeth II on 22 July 1985 on the site of the original Oak Tree under which Queen Elizabeth I heard of her succession to the throne on 17 November 1558. Upon hearing that she was Queen, legend has it that Elizabeth quoted the 118th Psalm's twenty-third line, in Latin: "A Dominum factum est illud, et est mirabile in oculis notris" -- "It is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes."
