The village was a centre for candle making, noted for lead mining and made famous by the discovery of Ashford marble which was first quarried by Henry Watson in 1748.

Description

Sheepwash bridge, Ashford in the Water

So called as lambs were placed in the pen on one side of the river and the Ewes swam across the river to get to them, while being pushed underwater by the Shepherds to clean the fleece before shearing."
