Description

St James Church, Hemingford Grey

St James Church, Hemingford Grey, from the south bank of the Great Ouse. Over 800 years old. The original spire was blown down in a hurricane on 8th September 1841, the force of the wind enough to hurl one stone twenty yards and break a window pane on the house behind. Inside the church, the Norman Arch Is the oldest part of the building. See also the double piscina, mediaeval font and ancient parish chest. The stained glass window in the south aisle is a memorial to the Margetts family, churchwardens for 150 years.
