About Calceby

Often referred to as the 'lost village of the Wolds' Calceby lies close to the southern-most tip of the famous Bluestone Heath Celtic road, said to have been used by Ancient Britain's before the Romans arrived. It is here on a high, hilly outcrop, that a village is said to have slipped away in the year 1621 - the reason why this happened has been shrouded in mystery for centuries. All that can be seen is a mass of moss-covered ruins of an ancient church and, all that appears left is a farmhouse and a scattering of cottages. Fact or fiction - who knows! What is true though, is that the high vantage point of Bluestone Heath Road, affords some of the finest views in the Wolds. It is great walking country with an abundance of flora and fauna. The beauty of the Lincolnshire Wolds has excited and inspired generations of artists and poets including Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who was born in Somersby and who wrote in his poem 'Maud' of 'the silent woody places' of his boyhood.

A visit here is to walk amid natures finest offerings of peaceful pastures and gently rolling hills, it refreshes the spirit, restores a sense of wellbeing, hard won in today's driven world.

Places to visit include: Ailby Museum and Windmill, Snipe Dales, Somersby - birthplace of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Lincolnshire Aviation Centre and the beautifully preserved Market town of Louth.
