About Halton
This is a peaceful hillside village beside the picturesque River Lune. It has rising, winding streets with a delightful mix-match of cottages hiding behind old grey-stone walls.
Halton Castle, an motte and bailey earthwork, rises gently on a site above Church Brow, it is crowned with a flagpole, from here there are splendid views of the village and surrounding countryside.
The village church is interesting for its wonderful Roman alter and 15th-century tower. Built mostly of local stone, the church has relief black and white timber-work above the porch. In the walled church yard there are ancient graves and tombs, and an 11th-century carved cross.
A pleasant atmospheric inn is a focal point of village life, the White Lion has been welcoming visitors for over 400 years, and continues to offer a warm Lancastrian welcome to all who pass through its doors.
Halton lies a short distance away from the beautiful wooded valley known as the Crook of Lune, this is an exceptionally scenic spot where you can enjoy a serene atmosphere whilst enjoying sun dappled waters and the life of the river. Within easy reach, further along the river, lies Aughton, a pretty village where the crime writer E.C.Lorac (1894-1958) lived. In her books she makes mention of the Lune Valley, particularly in The Crook of Lune and Stillwater. Even more importantly, the haunting beauty of the Crook of Lune was immortalised in a painting by Turner C.1825.
There are many tiny hidden hamlets to be enjoyed in this lovely area, Gressingham is found further along the Lune and, Hornby Castle sitting high above the village of Hornby can be seen for miles around.
These pleasant valley villages amid the exceptional beauty of this part of Lancashire are of immense charm, each has its own character and warmth. This is an ideal touring area, with a range of lovely scenery mixed with the old and historic - take a look around, you will not be disappointed.
