About Cuckmere Haven

This is one of those delightful little places that can only be reached on foot. Cuckmere Haven lies beneath the 282 ft cliffs that are home to Seaford Nature Reserve, and in the 18th-century Cuckmere was the haunt of smugglers who brought in quantities of liquor, tobacco, fine lace and other treasures. These days are long since gone and Cuckmere Haven is a place of peace and rare tranquility, not much can be heard but the sounds of lapping waves and the cries of the sea birds circling above.

It is here that the Cuckmere River makes it's final loop before reaching the shore. There are delightful inland walks along the banks of the river which forms part of the beautiful South Downs Way.
