Backlit sheep Ambleside A few yards on from the gate was this small field of sheep grazing on still dew covered grass. Scandale 17 Looking back up yo High Pike with Little Hart Crag to the right overlooking Scandale Head. High Pike is as steep and craggy as it looks and I was glad I was going down not back up!! Scandale 16 Scandale Head as seen from High Pike. Red Screes on the right with the various fells around Patterdale behind. The sheepfold towards the bottom right is where the easy part of the walk finishes!! Just to the left of it is a gate which leads to the uphill stretch to the saddle at the lower edge of Red Screes before turning left and still heading uphill to pass under Little Hart Crag on route towards the High Pike Ridge and the long, much awaited descent back to Ambleside. Scandale 15 Scandale from High Pike. The ridge on the left eventually leads up to Red Screes. Scandale 13 Another view from the descent from Scandale Head. Windermere again in full view from head to toe with Belle Isle in the centre. Heading down to High Pike. Must get up there again someday when there are no clouds, but as previously mentioned the temperature was somewhere around 23c. Scandale 12 Finally on the downward leg from Scandale Head towards High Pike. Windermere in centre and Coniston Water out on the right. Dropping in from the left is Scandale Fell which forms the eastern flank of Scandale with Wansfell Pike just behind. Oh! and you might just be able to see a dry stone wall somewhere in the image!! Scandale 11 Higher up on Scandale Head now and looking south down to Ambleside. Windermere can be seen in its entirety again from Waterhead at Ambleside to Lakeside at the south. Coniston Water clearly visible towards the right and Morecambe Bay just on the horizon in line with Belle Isle. High Pike heading down the ridge on the right and onto Low Pike and eventually Ambleside. I was quite looking forward to getting on to the ridge. Scandale 10 Northeast of Scandale Head. Just a glimpse of the southern end of Brotherswater with Gill Crag in front. Just showing on the right are the slopes of Hartsop Dodd leading on to Lingy Crag and Place Fell in the mid distance. Scandale 9 Finally reached the slopes of Scandale Head. Ambleside can be seen at the end of the path along Scandale with Windermere behind. Just below us is the diminutive Scandale Tarn and to the right the ridge that separates Scandale from the Fairfield Horseshoe. The plateau on the right leading to High Pike and Low Pike eventually leading down to High Sweden Bridge and Ambleside. Still got quite a bit of climbing to reach the plateau.... Scandale 6 A little further on north towards Scandale, but once again looking back along the path from Ambleside and High Sweden Bridge. An hour or so later I would be heading down the ridge on the right. Just a little bit higher than were I am now!! But there was still a fair bit of uphill to go before ease of the ridge. Scandale 5 Turning my back on Windermere again the walking is still very easy but looking ahead there seems no other way than up to Scandale Head. The track gradually works its way up the to the right and then various tracks can be found to carry on over the the heights on left. Quite easy walking at present but does get a bit steeper because in a couple of hours I was heading back to Ambleside along the ridge on the left!!
