Yes thats right Sue, about the wattle and daub. Straw was also used in the daub, but as you say cow dung, was used as that too contained straw. This type of filling was used a heck of a lot in Tuder houses. Once the filling dried, the smell of the dung disipated.

I live in Devon. My mother has a cob cottage. The walls are 3ft thick in places. It was built around 1700. There is a builder near us who still builds in cob. Look up the village of BROADHEMBURY in Devon. You will find photos on the internet. Most of the cottages there are built of cob with thatched roofs. Lyn

As for kitchen gardens, you would mostly need pics of manor houses / stately homes as these were the places that had enough space for the gardens and also the staff to tend them. Look at the UK National Trust website and you will find plenty. A particularly interesting one is BARRINGTON COURT. It has a wonderful kitchen garden and grows very unusual vegetables. Lyn
