Yes thats right Sue, about the wattle and daub. Straw was also used in the daub, but as you say cow dung, was used as that too contained straw. This type of filling was used a heck of a lot in Tuder houses. Once the filling dried, the smell of the dung disipated.

Hello!

I am new to the site... just put a post on the intro forum. My special area of interest is photos of cob cottages; and kitchen gardens. I would love to hear from anyone with similar interests and pictures to share.    Rose

Hi Rose

I live in Devon. My mother has a cob cottage. The walls are 3ft thick in places. It was built around 1700. There is a builder near us who still builds in cob. Look up the village of BROADHEMBURY in Devon. You will find photos on the internet. Most of the cottages there are built of cob with thatched roofs. Lyn

Hi again, Rose

As for kitchen gardens, you would mostly need pics of manor houses / stately homes as these were the places that had enough space for the gardens and also the staff to tend them. Look at the UK National Trust website and you will find plenty. A particularly interesting one is BARRINGTON COURT. It has a wonderful kitchen garden and grows very unusual vegetables. Lyn

Hello Lynda

WELCOME to the very best website and forum on the net! Obviously the fellow members have failed to see your post (probably still sleeping off the effects of a Saturday night out), but NOT ME! I spotted it and so once again WELCOME LYNDA!!

Thanks for sharing the info on Cob Cottages because we were struggling a little bit on this one. Have fun (and many hours) looking back at who said what within this CRAZY but fun forum!
