About Cusworth Hall & Museum
Cusworth Hall is a mid 18th century house built for the Wrightson family, with wings added later by James Paine.
The house is renowned for its fine plaster ceilings, and chimneypieces and is preserved as a Grade I listed building being of special interest for epitomising all that is best in a fine Georgian property of character.
Cusworth Hall, surrounded by a large park with many facilities, is home to the Museum of South Yorkshire Life. This depicts the changing social and living environs of Yorkshire folk over the past two hundred and fifty years, together with an insight into working conditions and the effects of the Industrial Revolution.
At present Cusworth Hall is undergoing major refurbishment. During the various procedures, painstaking conservation work has led to the discovery of beautifully painted ceilings in the chapel. After 50 years of neglect these are now restored ready for when the Hall re-opens to the public in 2007. Meanwhile visitors continue to be welcomed for walks in the grounds, to explore the lakes and woodland, and for tea or coffee in the Tea-Room.
