About Burnham-on-Sea

This invigorating Somerset coastal resort offers visitors a variety of experiences. It has a rich expanse of sand covering almost seven miles of coast, making it an idyllic resort for families with children.

To the rear of the beach visitors to the town can enjoy a pleasant flower filled promenade, lots of little shops for souvenirs, buckets and spade, and fishing nets! There are pleasing properties from the Victorian era, many of these converted into comfortable hotels and friendly bed and breakfast homes.

From the beach, stretching out towards the sea holiday-makers can see Burnham's Low Lighthouse with its characteristic eight legs. A lighthouse was first built here during the 1800's to warn ships of perilous sandbanks. Further along on the coast road towards Brean Down visitors can see what is known as the "High Lighthouse" this is at level of 100feet above the sea.

The coast between here and Weston-Super-Mare is lively with plenty of activities going on. Since World War II there has been an explosion of caravan and leisure parks in the area which means it is pretty crowded during the summer months. At other times it makes a pleasant weekend retreat that has several historic merits. Burnham-on-Sea was mentioned in the Doomsday Book, although early history records connections with King Alfred who left it in his will as a Royal Domain. Along its leafy lanes there remains several picturesque 17th century cottages and in the region there are churches surviving from Norman times.

Burnham-on-Sea has fish and chips, a few restaurants and cafes. There is a nearby golf club, but for wider shopping and more interesting leisure facilities visitors need to travel to Weston-Super-Mare.
