a Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the county of Somerset

Quantock hills, Somerset

About Quantock Hills

This beautiful range of hills is a part of England where stags and deer can still be seen roaming freely. In many ways the scenic beauty of the hills is similar to Exmoor, but is lacking in Exmoor's romantic bare horizons for in many places the Quantocks are more heavily wooded.

The range of hills covers some 12 miles long, 3 miles wide at the highest point is around 1300 feet. It is particularly imposing and a sharp contrast to Somerset's flatter countryside sprawled out below the Mendip Hills. At the top, the landscape is covered with heather, bracken and bushes of wild fruit. From certain parts along the ridge it is possible to see the Bristol Channel and on a clear day you can see the dramatic panorama of the coast of Wales.

The forests of the Quantocks have never been Royal, following the Conquest it was split and parcelled out to Norman baron's, history records these lands have changed families less than in most areas, maybe this is the reason they remain unspoilt and very beautiful.

Beneath the hills there are lovely villages and a fertile landscape of farms with fields full of ripening corn. Exploring these little villages is well worth the time, for often you can come across the unexpected tucked away in a leafy lane!
