About Itchen Abbas

A beautiful village in a serene and picturesque valley whose meadows are watered by the gently flowing, trout filled waters of the River Itchen as it continues it's journey towards Southampton where it will meet with the sea.

The village church is a splendid 19th-century reconstruction of an earlier church which was quite possibly first established in Saxon times. The church, dedicated to St.John the Baptist is located in a lovely quiet spot close to the river, it has a well tended church-yard with interesting graves and tomb-stones.

It is not surprising to find this village is said to be the inspiration for the novel-The Water Babies, by Charles Kingsley, who stayed nearby at a local inn. With its pretty cottages, old mill and sparkling river, there could be no finer back-drop for this enduring story written by Kingsley for his youngest son which was published in 1863. It has thrilled and inspired children (and adults) all over the world.

A short distance from the village lies one of the most interesting small gardens to be seen in the area. Abbey Cottage Garden is the work of the owner, who has created a haven of beauty, with colourful plants and flowers to be seen at every changing season. Colonel Daniell, opens the garden to the public only by prior appointment for the benefit of the National Gardens Scheme charities.

The local village pub, the Trout Inn offers a warm welcome, good ale, wines and food to be enjoyed in comfortable surroundings with a pleasant atmosphere.
