About Winchester City Mill
In this City of many fine historic sites, none is more pleasant than the peaceful charm of Winchester City Mill standing beside the River Itchen.
A mill has stood near the bridge spanning the river close to where the city's East Gate once stood for centuries. Certainly one was here at the time of the Doomsday Book if not before. For when the book was recorded in 1086 it mentions a mill on this spot as the property of the nuns of Wherwell Abbey. For whatever reason, later in the 16th century, the mill became the property of the City Corporation.
The mill we see today was erected in 1744, it is of local brick with rustic hanging tiles, and with its fully restored water-wheel, Winchester City Mill presents visitors with an eye-catching picture.
The mill makes an interesting visit, it is in the care of the National Trust, and on the same site is the Trust's shop and a Youth Hostel.
