About Shoeburyness
Shoeburyness lies to the eastern end of Southend beyond Thorpe Bay. At the other side of the tip or "ness" is the sprawl of Maplin Sands. In summer this is a busy place, popular for sailing.
The Ministry of Defence site at Pig's Bay is situated close by, and the town is the eastern terminus for the London Tilbury and Southend railway.
Plans are afoot to build a great tower in the centre of Shoeburyness Garrison housing development. The tower is intended to rival the "Angel of the North" and will be part of the "Thames Gateway" project, a development to uplift this part of the Thames estuary.
There are good views of the river and its busy shipping lanes, and it is often to catch sight of some of the world's finest liners.
