in the county of Kent

Sheerness, on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent

About Sheerness

This is the port to which Nelson's body was brought home following his untimely death after his glorious victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Sheerness is the main town on the Isle of Sheppey, it has been a naval centre since the rule of Charles II, though changes brought in over the centuries by ever increasing modern methods of defence, gradually reduced its importance. It is though an ideal place from which to view shipping on the Thames Estuary.

The Sheerness Lifeboat is situated at Garrison Point, visitors here are welcome by appointment. The Sailing Club can be found in the Marine Parade.

The sea front gives Sheerness its unique atmosphere, and in spite of being largely built-up there is a hinterland of pleasant rural areas.
