About Norton Priory Museum & Gardens
Runcorn is almost entirely encircled by two canals, the Bridgewater Canal built during the middle of the 18th century and the Manchester Ship Canal built 150 years later.
It is in this historic town that visitors will find the delightful Norton Priory Museum and Gardens. The priory originated as the medieval home of a community of Augustinian cannons. It has miraculously survived throughout the ages, so that today we may enjoy seeing the splendid buildings, including the beautiful Priory church, in the matchless setting of sweetly scented peaceful gardens - these feature a Walled Garden with a National Collection of herbs, roses, tree quinces, fruit and vegetables.
The priory was the home of the Brooke family for over 400 years, and the museum as well as recalling the times when medieval monks trod the tranquil, secluded grounds also tells the story of when it was inhabited by generations of the Brooke family.
Visitors will find Norton Priory a serene place to visit, it is full of historic interest fully exploring the lives of the monks and has ancient pathways leading through lovely woodland gardens where visitors can wander at their leisure.
There is an on-site coffee shop, a retail outlet for the sale of plants and a temporary exhibition gallery.
Norton Priory Museum hosts a wide range of annual events, including events with a medieval theme.
