About Didcot

The delightful township of Didcot has little or no history of it's own but it does have a past that is inextricablely linked to that of Oxford. The coming of the railways changed the fortunes of what was naught but a sleepy Oxfordshire village forever. Brunel's Great Western Railway arrived in Oxford in 1841 and made Didcot an important railway junction. It remains so to this day.

All the romance of the steam age is gathered here in Didcot at the fine museum of the Great Western Society and the old locomotive depot makes an interesting setting for a sparkling collection of GWR engines and relics from the past.

The change in fortunes meant the growth and development of Didcot as a lively suberb. It is a pleasant place with many new housing estates, shops and other businesses. Interestingly, the Williams formula one motor racing team was until recently based in Didcot but the need for larger premises forced it's move elsewhere. There are many pleasures to be experienced in this region, the Ridgeway Path runs through open countryside to the south of Didcot where there are several old hamlets and villages
