About Merchant Adventurers' Hall

This magnificent timber-frame building is perhaps the most notable legacy to come out of the Middle Ages. It was built in York by the oldest and most powerful of the city's guilds.

Much of this building dates from the 14th century, around the walls are hung vibrant historic banners, adding to the wonderful medieval atmosphere of the building.

The Hall now serves as a museum, visitors will not only stare in amazement at the purity of the medieval splendour of the place, but they will also learn how the merchants of the day conducted their business in the Great Hall, which was also used as a court and for social entertainments. The Halls Undercroft and its beautiful Chapel are available to visitors, and collections on display include fine paintings, furniture and silver.

Display boards recall some of the history of the building, and there is an Audio Guide.

The Hall is surrounded by peaceful gardens, these are an ideal place to tarry reflecting on all the wonders you have seen, the gardens also make a lovely place to take photographs.

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall may be hired for the use of Civil marriage ceremonies and wedding receptions, Banquettes, Dinners, Lectures and Performances.
