About Scarborough
It was in the 19th century that the greatest changes came to Scarborough. This fine spa town has laid claim to healing properties for it's waters for almost 200 years. Not only were they said to cure melancholy but also asthma, skin problems and to cleanse the blood. Worthy of note is the fact that Anne Bronte (1820-1849) was one of the many invalides who came to Scarborough for the sea-cure. Sadly, she died here in 1849 and is buried in a local church-yard.
During the Victorian and Edwardian times the zest for sea-bathing swept the whole country and Scarborough lays claim to the invention of the bathing machine
To this day Scarborough remains a very popular resort and this delightful north coast town overlooks two magnificent sandy bays which are divided by a huge headland. North bay is very popular for its rock pools but those wishing to spend time sun bathing will be more likely to prefer the softer, more sheltered sands of South bay.
There are many gracious old buildings to be seen both in and around the town and the natural history museum, art gallery and medicinal baths are interestingly housed in victorian properties. Around the harbour stand picturesque buildings including the Customs House, King Richard 111's house along with some really splendid old inns.
Modern living is well catered for in this area and branches of all major high street stores can easily be found.
There is much to engage the visitor in this fine old resort, not least, the very pretty seafront gardens and lovely wide promenades along which to enjoy an afternoon or evening stroll just as our fashionable ancestors did a century or so ago.
