About Burgh Castle Marina & Caravan Park

A fascinating marina forms part of Burgh Castle's modern day attractions, this is laid out in a picturesque setting long the banks of the River Yare.

The town is renowned for its many beauty spots, most particularly for its spectacular Roman ruins and impressive views of the Yare and tranquil marshland of the Waveney valley.

History records that this was the Gariannonum of the Romans. By the end of the occupation it was one of chain of fortresses built by the Romans to guard the East Coast. Today, the remnants give some idea of the immense strength of the original building which incredibly dates back to around A.D.290. Later, in 640 the castle received the Irish St.Furzey who founded a monastery within the castle boundary. When the Normans arrived, the building was once more restored to its former use as a castle and later when the building lay abandoned it was pillaged of its stone by locals. The ruins of Burgh Castle are a - must see, and are in the care of English Heritage.

The village church, dedicated to St.Peter and St.Paul, has a Norman round tower and is mostly of Norman build, it has however been much restored in past centuries, but still has plenty to offer the visitor including a finely carved Perpendicular font.

Today, most people visit Burgh Castle for the attraction of its waters - it lies within The Broads National Park, a magical landscape of rich countryside and sparkling waters that provides the perfect recipe for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Here in Burgh Castle beneath the soft Norfolk skies you can enter a world full of natural beauty and charm. You can spend lazy days exploring tranquil waters rippling through gentle water-meadows inhabited by a wealth of wildlife, or you can choose to wander, walking through the leafy lanes of the surrounding peaceful countryside. Cycling is a relaxing activity, there are plenty of cycle routes. Other attractions include fishing, boating and bird-watching. And of course this part of Norfolk is wonderful for painting enthusiasts, the broads have been the haunt of many a famous artist for decades past.

Within easy reach of Burgh is the favoured seaside resort of great Yarmouth, with its blue flag beaches and bright lights. Inland lies historic Norwich which offers a rich diversity of old buildings and a magnificent cathedral church. These are the places to go if you are looking for shopping opportunities and night-life.

For many, there is not much to beat the peace, tranquillity and riverside perfection of Burgh Castle, it holds and enchants offering all who come here special memories of skies filled with flights of geese, and a panoramic landscape of water, lazy cattle grazing on meadows, and in the distance old oast-houses and windmills.

Burgh Castle has a wonderful slow pace of life, here you feel as though you really are away from the cares and demands of the modern day. Thus, this is an idyllic location to unwind, enjoy a romantic weekend, or a longer stay to discover beautiful coastal scenery, a wealth of peaceful waters and a rich diversity of picture-postcard villages.
