About Somerleyton
Found nestling in a corner of the north-east Suffolk countryside is the charming, tranquil village of Somerleyton. The village is perhaps best known as the home of Somerleyton Hall, a grand Victorian mansion set in extensive grounds with an historic maze.
In the village visitors can see pleasant thatched cottages set along leafy lanes, and a delightful village duck pond. A long distance footpath called The Anglers Way passes through the village, and there are several farmhouses dotted around the patchwork of fields and lanes belonging to the Somerleyton Estate.
This is an excellent destination for anyone wishing to explore the Norfolk Broads, it is within easy reach of the famous Suffolk coast, is ideal for birdwatching and for touring several of the national trust properties spread throughout the area.
The village has a few amenities including an attractive thatched village shop.
Worth a mention is the fact that the village was home to Christopher Cockerell at the time he invented the hovercraft.
The River Waveney flows close to the village, this has some pretty parts and offers the opportunity to discover the natural life of the river from walks along pleasant riverside paths.
