About John Wesley's House
A rare gem in a city full of jewels, the last home of John Wesley, founder of Methodism attracts Methodist visitors from all over the world. The 18th-century house was built by Wesley to provide a base for when he was not travelling the country visiting other Methodist chapels. It also provided a home for preachers who came to preach in the Methodist chapel next door. The house is now a museum and contains many original items of furniture belonging to John Wesley and used by him when preparing his sermons.
Next door, the Chapel, designed by architect George Dance the Younger, built in 1778 by Samuel Tooth, a builder and preacher was said by Wesley to be - perfectly neat but not grand - it contains the pulpit from which John Wesley preached and his tomb is in the graveyard. This quiet house of worship is known throughout the globe as The Cathedral of Methodism.
John Wesley was born in 1703. He lived in City Road, next to his Chapel for twelve years. The controversial years of his ministry over, he died peacefully at his home on the 2nd March, 1791.
